INTRO NOTES TO THE DECK & READING
As you will notice, this isn’t arriving in your email on the usual Monday that I promised - Labor Day totally escaped my notice.😆 Anyone who knows me shouldn’t be surprised - time blindness is just a part of the big, sparkly package of divine chaos that is me.
I blame the weightlessness of no longer having to live in survival mode for the increasing severity of that time blindness. It isn’t that I don’t care about getting things done on time, it’s that I’ve had to adjust my pace continuously over the past four years to meet each new challenge as it came, threatening to overtake me with grief, injury, or reverberations of past traumas. Ever since I opened Rose Connections back in 2020, I feel like I’ve been treading water despite tidal waves meant to drown me. Not only did I leave the practice of law that year, but in quick succession in 2021, I also lost my dad and grandpa (and several other loved ones, including our dog). Then I was recovering from ankle surgery in 2022 making it hard to sustain work while finishing up the estates and caring for my grandma as we suffered more losses. Then there was the great ancestral shadow work of 2023 where I lost my grandma and aunt.
As I flow into this intense glow-up phase of 2024, I have lost all sense of time because I’ve taken on a new sense of being. I have been able to arrange my life in such a way that I support my long-term healing. Part of the beauty of being a self-employed disabled consultant is the freedom to set my time and organizational expectations, to leverage myself out of the false urgency that sets my neurospicy trauma brain on fire. But boy does it get lonely sometimes, especially when I realize I have no sense of regularity that aligns with the rest of the world.
It is that loneliness that often gives rise to the most bleak of our distortions. One of my worst trauma responses is a repetitive chant - the impulse to say “nobody likes me” over and over in my head whenever I feel like I might be rejected. It was so automatic that I still catch myself mumbling this under my breath whenever I’m (rightfully and modestly) corrected. When I was at my worst this time in 2019 (July - October to be exact), this chant would be on rapid fire in my brain anytime I was unsure, insecure, caught in a broken promise, or challenged by a difficult personality. Twenty times an hour it was on repeat in my head, making it hard to concentrate on an email, taking me two hours to craft the perfect response because my body and brain were too burned out for anything other than mere survival.
Last week, you might recall I wrote in the Loneliness of Comparison:
This loneliness is purposeful, to keep us locked away in our survival. Too scared to reach up and out beyond the machinery…it is in our loneliness that our greatest distortions are reinforced…
Since the pandemic started, too many of us have found ourselves in survival mode. We have been tiptoeing and also Kool-Aid Man crashing through our barriers of trauma. But it hasn’t necessarily helped us feel any more connected or supported. This makes it easy to listen to the distortions of “nobody likes me” instead of facing counter-realities like, “Maybe I need to let people know that I like them more often too because they might be thinking the same thing.” That, my friends, is the basis of empathy and how we’ll leverage our world out of permanent survival mode into a thriving future full of healing.
Where We Are This Week

I grew up with the first prototype of a helicopter parent, except she was more of a crusader for justice. I think because my mom knew I was a sensitive kid, whenever I encountered a bully or a teacher/priest stuck in their own ignorance, she would crusade for me. I was very lucky in some ways, but ultimately it made me question whether I could really stand up for myself on my own. It ultimately hurt my confidence to not have some of those difficult lessons on my own. But by the time I hit college and had to stand up for myself against the president of our university, when she arrived a day later, all that was left for her to do was take me out for a drink and congratulate me on being so brave. This is the energy we need to have this week - we have to let our loved ones do it for themselves. They’ve gotta leave the nest sometime!

While this post won’t arrive in your inboxes in time for the New Moon in Virgo on Sept 2, it isn’t too late to use the energy to reset your intentions. We are in the season of harvests, so our guides invite us to take a look at all the good things we’ve reaped in these last six months. How are you a better embodiment of the gifts of the divine in your daily life? How have you integrated? How far do you still want to go in your development? The world has changed since we sowed those spring time intentions, plant new bulbs & seeds for what you want to see manifest six months from now.

The end of summer, the start of fall is usually a nostalgic time of year for most of us. The start of school season, football season, hunkering down into prepping for the trio of major holidays in the last quarter of the year. No matter what the triggers for the nostalgia are, remember that we can’t make this our whole personality. Yes, I know…I adore Christmas-solstice-Thanksgiving-Halloween (in reverse order) too…but we can’t let those memories make us too sentimental to make some of the hard choices about our future. Namely, the consumerism that contributes to the problems we are facing globally. (Microplastics & Legend Water) The message this week is to savor what you can, but discard the memories, traditions, and ideals that sour our Earth’s recovery…it’s okay to make room for new customs that better fit the world we want to create.

Speaking of harvest season, check out all the cool things that have manifested for you and your ancestral lineage since you started on this path. You put in the work, you were diligent and disciplined and now you’re seeing the fruits of your labor. Don’t dismiss what you’ve accomplished. This is just the first round. Each subsequent time you plant these seeds, work this ground and tend this emotional garden you are improving the yield of what you can do. The sacrifices have been worth it and will take you further than you even planned. Take stock and see how far you’ve already come!

As we are seeing in Aurora, CO, there are some forces that will stop at nothing to try to provoke a response. With misinformation flying in all directions and now with Mercury Direct, it’s important that we not let our impulsiveness get the better of us. The temptation to post a savage takedown of some account could get the better of us. We have to be very mindful not to contribute to “death by a thousand cuts” by getting goaded into pile-ons or cancel culture steamrolling. The temptation will be strong and consistent, but we have to rise above the desire to give these forces the ammunition to reinforce the lonely distortions. Stick with your community and shut out those who would shit on it.

Why does patriarchy and capitalism get to have all the fun? By creating a scheme that is inherently unequal, it gives an illusion of scarcity. But Mother Mary reminds us that we can always change the rules of the game. Who said that to be successful at business means that someone has to have all the toys? Wouldn’t it be much more…impressive…to use that big brain and superior resources to ensure the care and wellbeing of everyone? Lot of people know how to scale a business, but who knows how to provide equality on a large scale? Why can’t we make that the ultimate prize of our endeavors - whoever provides the most sustainable systems of equality and breaks capitalism first gets the last trophy humanity will ever need to give out? Wherever possible, let’s undermine the cause of selfishness, weaving plans that will constantly disrupt it to interrupt it gaining any more power or influence.
Undercurrent
Knight of Cups
Third Eye Chakra
Last week I heard a term that I’m quickly falling in love with - the tonic masculine. Focusing on the masculine archetypes of the King, Warrior, Magician, and Lover, it offers a blueprint for a more harmonious, vibrant, and collaborative definition of masculinity (regardless of gender identity or body type). I am lucky enough to know such shining examples of each of these kinds of men in my life. This week, no matter your gender identity, give some love to the men who are doing this hard work of unwinding old beliefs that focused on violence, shame, or control, but instead embracing those values and archetypes that support the connectedness of our humanity. When you see a sparkle of that self-aware charm, know that it is evidence that good things are happening in the undercurrent.

More and more people are learning about how the inequality of the world was actually part of the plan all along. No conspiracy theory is needed when corporations have a near monopoly on food or empower union-busting CEOs to take private jets as a jaunty commute. As the corruption of these systems unfurls with every passing day, as we all try to balance the vices with the virtues of continued participation in these systems, don’t the despair of what you see cause you to lose discipline or hope? Your willpower to build a new world is needed now more than ever. The temptation will be to do what is easy, to give up or give in while the world burns, but my friends, the only reason I’m here is to show you that this is just a step, an anticipated one, that will lead us to a more enlightened tomorrow. If we can be resolute in withstanding this moment in time, we will be armed with the information to avoid building these same problems into our future.
PARTING WORDS FROM A GEEK EMPRESS
This is the image that I shared with my patrons yesterday that gave some hints about this reading. There is a distracted sense of nostalgia that is tearing away at us. It tethers us to old ways of thinking, keeping us further from what we say we want. We want safety, but we label anyone who seeks psychological safety as “soft”. We want a four-day work week, but can’t tear ourselves away from the desk to even grab a quick lunch with friends. We want freedom, but obey a rote schedule someone else sets.
This isn’t meant pejoratively, trust me…I do the same thing. But at some point, we have to leverage ourselves out of these tolerated cycles of survival mode. But the more we reach for freedom, the more we feel the sentiment for a simpler time.
A few months ago, I found a thread that described the whole phenomenon of any “Things were better when (fill in the blank)” movement. No matter what time frame in history they’re referring to, the real message is always the same: we wish to be transported to a seemingly simpler time developmentally, like when we were ignorant tweens with plausible deniability of how we impact the world around us. Where our ignorance is still forgivable, our messes cleanable by someone else, and where everyone thinks we’re precocious but still precious. Where we live just outside the realm of self-awareness or indeed, even an awareness of and responsibility for the external world around us.
No matter where that time machine takes us, it won’t undo the responsibility we have to bridge the gaps between us. It won’t solve inequality, only exacerbate it by denying any consequences for our collective (in)action. It won’t replace our knowledge of our collective responsibility for the future with the rose-colored glasses of the isolationist, individualist past. It’s folly to think that it will also ever get us out of survival mode…because whether we realize it or not, we were barely surviving even back then much less now with actual grown-up problems at our feet.
Likewise with our world. I’m not sure I’m excited to build a future that doesn’t have meaningful checks and balances on excess, influence, or manipulated inequalities on corporations and billionaires. It seems inexcusable to allow inequality to continue when decisions to increase profits result in workers not being able to afford the food on their table (or a table at all). No one entity (no matter how broadly defined) should be entrusted with that much power. And yet to question it is treated as tantamount to treason.
With Citizens United and other decisions that further empower corporate influence in our political system, we are inching closer to a future where corporations control our future - like in the show Continuum (which is now thankfully back on Prime!). And what might seem shiny and new at first is revealed by the Devil card to be Power & Control Games 2.0.
I don’t know about you, but I would rather have a future where my survival isn’t debatable or sold for the most lucrative price; rather, I want that survival to matter enough to others to source solutions with empathy and reverence.
No matter how these Messages find you this week, know that I am always with you in love 💖
