INTRO NOTES TO THE DECK & READING
This weekend I had the honor of attending the Battlestar Galactica 20 Year Reunion event in Chicago hosted by Creation Entertainment. As many who were with us will attest, there was a sort of miraculous energy that was alive in that hotel all weekend. It was almost as if each and every one of us took the themes of the show seriously and showed up to prove to the cast and creators that #FleetIsFamily. 🫶
This was the first convention I have attended where I wasn’t responsible for some aspect of running it - teaching a class, organizing volunteers, handing out mics backstage or running interference with fans. I didn’t have to network with anyone or watch anyone’s booth, I got to just attend and soak up the atmosphere.
And what an atmosphere it was! Let’s just say that you haven’t lived until you’ve heard Admiral Adama himself lead the assembled in an inspiring chant of “So Say We All”. This happened on stage, flanked by the cast. They had donated items for an auction to raise money for the care and recovery of Michael Hogan (Col. Tigh), who had not been to a convention or even out of a hospital/clinical setting since his injury in 2020. So when Edward James Olmos pumped his fist in the air and shouted “So Say We All” this wasn’t just a reenactment, this was a personal rallying call to us, reminding us that we are all one humanity.
The fans responded in kind by raising $46,000 for the Hogans. This is what collective care and heart-centered leadership look like in action.💖 It was beyond inspirational touching on the magnificently miraculous. The outpouring of love will stay with me for a lifetime to come…I am humbled I got to be in the room to be a part of it.
Even more so because this weekend was also personal for me…not just because I’m a fan of the show or the brilliant talent that made it, but because I was back in Chicago for the first time since I had been outed 18 years ago. It was a homecoming, a reclamation of self. I was able to finally release myself from the guilt and shame I made an older version of myself carry on my behalf. That girl who survived because she chose to channel her suffering into becoming a queen for the first time. Back then, in all my shame and guilt, I punished her for the crime of living life on her own terms, exposing me to shame. I shamed her right back, abandoning her by the rocky lakeside. It’s taken eighteen years, but in the bitter wind of the lake, I finally made it up to her, forgiving myself in the process.
That freed me up to finally be able to live fully in the moment. The healing of a reclaimed throne, the grace of recognition in the kings, queens and heroes who remind me to fight for this precious humanity of mine. The vulnerable rangers who poured their hearts out on a screen to get us to find our own. The reverent fans who arrived from all over to be part of something special - far more special than any of us could have anticipated. What better welcome could I have found for the integrated and whole version of myself than celebrating this shared love?
Where We Are This Week
The Fool (R)
Root Chakra
Trust me, I get it. Life has thrown a lot at us all at once. We see a fracturing world and it’s hard to find hope or drive to tackle any new risk. This isn’t a confidence issue, but one of memory. We remember what it’s been like to put our faith in someone and have them slam it in our face. Just like it’s been hard for me to trust how exposed I can be with my vulnerability, there is an air of traumatic lived experience that makes us reluctant to risk it again. However, the problem with staying put and staying still is that as the world starts to crumble underneath us, if we don’t find a reason to take a leap of faith soon, we’ll be shoved into a direction we don’t want. No matter where you go next, let it be by choice.
Messages from our Guides
Seven of Pentacles
Third Eye Chakra
This is a hint that you have more going for you than meets the eye. Yes, you have be methodical and shrewd in how you approach the cares of your world, but you also have a lot more advantages and knowledge available to you than you realize. Normally I view this as the “practicality” card, but there is an edge of teamwork in the background. Knowing who has the right talents to pull off certain aspects of your plan, calling in the help you need to accomplish your ambitions ist just as much a part of the work as your own hard work is too.
Messages from Lady Gaia/Mother Earth
The Devil
Solar Plexus Chakra
Years ago, when I was first starting to do charity readings for fundraisers, I gave a reading to another professional reader. When the Devil came up in the reading, I was perplexed because I couldn’t understand why it was in that position given the energy I was reading from him. What he explained is that the Devil is about our relationship to the concept of the scapegoat. Afterall, the Devil is simply a construct on which to hang our collective blame. “The Devil made me do it,” can be absolved, after all. We can be forgiven if we were tricked, swindled, forced, coerced into doing bad things. But in reality, the bad guy is usually the one who was pointing the finger to begin with, assigning blame so he could escape his own. In this respect, we might need to break out of the “good/bad” paradigms and start looking the devil(s) in the eye and seeing them for what they really are. And they *gasp* might be from the most righteous people of them all.
Messages from the Ancients
Four of Pentacles
Heart Chakra
The ancients are rolling their eyes at us. So often they have plucked us out of bad situations, just for us to take a U-turn right back into the same frying pan on the fire. “Don’t make us chase you to protect you,” they say as they tsk their tongue and wag their finger at us. We asked for protection, guidance and help, yet when they deliver by ushering us out the door of a good-for-nothing lover, we abandon those boundaries in order to chase a freedom that will sabotage us. Work with the ancestors to develop a language to know when this is their intuitive protection versus our own anxious attachments at play.
Messages from our Future Selves
Queen of Swords
Throat Chakra
We stick with the throat chakra this week because more than anything we will need to be assiduous about our communication boundaries. In particular, I see the energy of Laura Roslin, an educator-turned-leader who used her gifts in the pursuit of a singular vision to guide humanity to its next destination. This is about finding that leader within who can hold the line, put in the work and apply their gifts to the betterment of humanity’s future. And let’s just say that it’s not our inner Gaius Baltar.
Messages from Mother Mary
The Lovers
Crown Chakra
Last week I shared my Spider Queen series: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 because we were challenged to make peace with our past as I was doing with my own. This card is a confirmation of how far we’ve come. Because when we love ourselves as well as we love others, we then allow ourselves to be protected by the ancestors and we make the hard call to walk away from situations that could hurt us. When we value others as we value ourselves, we honor their consent andwe take their feelings into consideration. Learn to embody the Prentice Hemphill quote “Boundaries are the distance at which I can love you and me simultaneously”
Undercurrents
Nine of Wands (R)
Sacral Chakra
Spoiler alert: we aren’t fooling anyone with the stubbornness routine. By clinging to the self-control, the disciplined process, the regimented ideals, we are actually getting ourselves further away from our pursuits. That’s why “Make America Great Again” is just code for “I’m too stubbornly attached to a distorted view of what was because I’m incapable of embracing what could be.” In the world we are entering, those who insist on going it alone, on bootstrapping their way to success will be seen with suspicion far more than those who want to reach out to connect and help. There are no heroes where we are going…only helpers.
Final Advice
Judgment
Crown Chakra
Another major card this week, this one comes down from on high in the last week before the election. It’s time to make a choice: which values will you embody? One that operates out of fear and separation or one that acknowledges the timeless connection of all things? One that casts blame on the generation before, while shoveling dirt on the premature graves of those who come after us? Or one that employs all means necessary to unwind the world from its addictions to greed, including and especially those selfish tendrils growing within us?
These are the moments that will define us…and in the words of Admiral Adama: It's not enough to survive... One has to be worthy of survival.
PARTING WORDS FROM A GEEK EMPRESS
As I’ve been writing this I’ve been watching videos and photos pouring in from the cast and fellow fans about this weekend. Even though I originally pulled these before I left, the meaning required that infusion of love. Thank the gods I waited to write this!
On the banner that the con producers put out to thank showrunner, Ron D. Moore, I wrote “For the love of our shared humanity, we humbly thank you.” Because that’s what this show meant for me - it explored all the facets of our humanity - our propensity for darkness, our potential for light, grasping at the fraying fabric of our connections to make it through the next 33 minutes, 78 hours or months and years into the beyond. That each of the cast members spoke eloquently about their vulnerability, the depth of the material, connected with the audience in ways that made us remember and embrace our own.
For my part, I am so happy I got to share with Mary McDonnell how I point to Laura Roslin as a study in heart-centered leadership, including all the mistakes that come with it. I’m gratified I got to thank Edward James Olmos for the speeches he gave at my high school in Pueblo while I was on the Save Central Committee, my very first board. I’m in awe of Tricia Helfer’s immense wisdom and courageous presence. And to connect with Tahmoh Penikett over how we both have used our mixed heritage to right the wrongs our families & communities have experienced only exemplifies why this show still connects us so strongly 20 years later.
It isn’t lost on me that we are all about to face a crisis of faith with the United States election. Whether you live here or not, it is inevitable that ripples will touch even the most stable of governments and personalities. There is a safety in stubbornness, clinging to the old gods, holding to the letter of the law, depending on the same, stable systems to continue operating in the midst of collective catastrophe. While there are a million different lessons we can take from BSG, I think one of the biggest is that our experience of humanity is ultimately governed not by our rules, but by our very human choices in the thick of things.
Like Starbuck’s choice to pass Zac Adama in flight school. Or Lee Adama’s choice to leave the uniform for government. Or Baltar’s choice to let Six have access as a means of impressing her. Or Cally’s choice to shoot Boomer. Each of these have ripples of consequence - some that we can anticipate, most that we cannot.
My friends, if I could bottle up the love that I got this weekend to share with each of you, I would. But I will leave you with this: it is our ability to reach out for each other…to keep choosing connection over separation, that we prove ourselves worthy of surviving. Just like when Adama chooses to bring the fleet together, that they finally start to find the way to earth, it is only when we choose to reconcile with our fractured selves that we can find a way forward as a people toward a common goal. It’s when we choose to trust, even with those that experience tells us we shouldn’t that we find solutions…just like when Adama trusts Athena to deliver a plan to liberate New Caprica is the solution to keep his family, the fleet, safe.
No matter what, let those choices be for the worthiness of our survival, not the expediency of our grievances. So Say We All.
No matter how these Messages find you this week, know that I am always with you in love 💖
