INTRO NOTES TO THE DECK & READING
How many of us feel like every day is an exercise in trying to maintain our own peace enough to engage with the world on an even minimal level? Or is it just me? Maybe it's because I am facing my grandma's funeral on Tuesday or that I am still fighting with our insurance company to fix our basement. Or maybe it's just that every day my feed is full of evidence that although we are waking up to the immense disparities in the rest of the world, that we're still reacting with the same energy that created some of those problems. Even when it gets better each day, it feels that much heavier, and harder to bear.
This deck, the Tarot of Transformation is great to help us unwind questions like, "Is posting a picture of my cat an act of selfishness during a genocide?" I admit, that's gone through my mind at least once in the past week. While the deck normally doesn't read reversed, I included them here because the shadow self has much to teach us. The overall theme this week is not to get so lost in the navel-gazing self-doubt that we miss what this is all for - a more connected future.
As we move forward into this holiday season, I hope we give ourselves a chance to free ourselves of the confines of doubt as well as the impulse to compare and judge others. I hope we use our accusations as a signal to self-reflect and examine our conscience. I hope we find ways to reach for interdependence and connection without shoving away those who want to learn from our example. May we aim for our highest selves without sacrificing the integrity of our lived experience and interconnectedness.
These Messages of Divine Love are weekly intuitive card readings offered to share strength & hope for those building a heart-centered world. Where We Are This Week
Teacher (Knight) of Swords (R)
Third Eye Chakra
Most days we don’t know whether we’re coming or going. We have so much to offer, but when self-doubt is all that emerges from the chaos of the unknown, we know that we need a reset to get our heads on straight. If you find yourself excessively questioning yourself, remember that there are lots of ways to serve that may not look like anyone else’s. In the face of so much swirling around us, it’s necessary to discern what is ours from what is getting stirred up in our reactions. To show up as the teacher/knight, we have to be anchored in a reality that can help us make sense of all the conflicting messages within.
Messages from our Guides
Teacher (Knight) of Disks
Sacral Chakra
One of the masters of the physical realm, the Pentacles, is represented in the image of a cat. Moving with deliberate intention, they don’t make friends unless it is on their terms, their choice. They don’t show their teeth unless threatened. They live in a world of sacred balance, finding a way to tip-toe through the day until they are ready to pounce. Embrace this energy as we learn to move more seamlessly through our lives. Choosing who we share our stories with the same deliberate discernment of this kind of embodied power.
Messages from Lady Gaia/Mother Earth
Teacher (Knight) of Wands
Solar Plexus Chakra
More than anything, the Earth needs our embodied action right now. That means not only coming up with great ideas but sticking with them when things get hard. That means not only dreaming up a new world but taking the steps to achieve it. It means not just talking the talk, but walking the walk (no matter who is or isn’t looking). It means teaching others how to actualize their passions into reality, how to respond in times of crisis, and how to transform pain into joy. All of it matters, so long as it moves us at least one step further down the road of justice, liberation, and dignity of all people.
Messages from the Ancients
Healer of Swords (R)
Throat Chakra
The reason this one is a throat chakra card instead of a more intuitive third eye card is that we’re already having trouble discerning our internal voice from the cacophony of opinions swirling around us. To do this, we have to know what is truly ours. We need to do some radical listening through the act of mediation to better organize and understand not only what is being said, but who is saying it. Recognizing when to let go of overly critical voices that overwhelm our ability to cope is a necessary practice to discern our true guidance from the dissonant voices introducing new doubt and old traumas.
Messages from Our Future Selves
The Lovers
Heart Chakra
For weeks the messages have been talking to us about finding our flock of friends and our collective of loved ones to provide nourishment and support as we fight the good fight. Here we have confirmation that new beloveds are entering our lives. A beloved doesn’t necessarily need to be a lover, but rather an anam cara, a soul companion, who sees us for who we are, truly accepting us for who we are and who we can be together. Sure, that can be sexual or romantic, but it’s also just the essence of love. Here, our future selves confirm that soon we’ll be able to rest in the arms of comfort to reclaim our true selves in the reflection of who we are with others. For truly, the best and most elusive love is what we give ourselves…so our beloveds serve as a sacred reminder that even we are worthy of love.
Messages from Mother Mary
Six of Wands
Crown Chakra
Finally, a message I can get behind. Here is something that all successful people have in common: They believed in their vision enough to make it happen. It doesn’t mean they stubbornly did it all by themselves, but that even when others didn’t believe, they still did, impossibly. It doesn’t mean they never doubted, it means they still found a way to believe. And no one believes in us nearly as much as the universal Mother. Take a page out of that book and let it stir the faith enough to spring us into divine action and thus, a new level of success in all that we wish to achieve. Nothing happens without faith fueling our motivation.
Undercurrent
The Fool (R)
Root Chakra
This has been a persistent card for the past few weeks. While we are at the precipice of achievement, and actualization, there is something that is still holding us back. A fear…a judgment…a technicality or an unknown variable that stops us from taking the plunge into our new, authentic self. What stops us from believing in our ability to meet life’s challenges? What traumas are present in our memory that make us second-guess our intuitive wisdom or highest aspirations? This feels most like a root chakra issue where an ancestral fear or present-life memory is bubbling to the surface along with the excited butterflies of possibility.
Final Advice
Two of Swords (R)
Third Eye Chakra
One of the biggest problems we are facing is one of terminal comparison. We see what everyone else is doing and we start to feel like our efforts are inadequate. They have more xxx than us, doing better than us, are doing more than us…They are so much better than we are. Social media encourages this kind of comparison, a sort of hyper-popularity competition when absolutely none of us are or ever should be the same. Check the values that are driving this comparison and note how it’s interfering with your ability to achieve the vision you have for the world.
PARTING WORDS FROM A GEEK EMPRESS
This week I got the question, “Is it selfish to post a photo of my cat during a genocide?” and I thought it was something worth contemplating for myself. But in evaluating the question, I kept hearing the judgmental voices of people who are excessively worried about being liberalism’s resident hall monitors. And when I was dealing with the real-life grief of losing my grandma and friend within two days of each other, I was surprised by how little room I allowed myself to just feel.
Yet, through it all my cats have been an endless source of joy and comfort. Likewise, their needs don’t end just because genocide is happening in the world. It was only through meditation and purposeful silencing of all the opinions out there that I came to an answer I could live with - one that reflected my own embodied truth:
It is only finding the bubbles of beauty, sweetness, and humor in my feed that has kept me going during exceptionally dark emotional turmoil. I have relied on those bursts of joy to remind me that pockets and corners of hope still connect us. It is the cute, the funny, the sexy, and the freedom of life that reminds us of the freedom we are seeking for the rest of the world. In encouraging people to feel we replenish the passion to fight for a life worth living.
May you too find ways to break up the overwhelming thought with pockets of bliss and peels of laughter. May we end this week with far less judgment for providing the smiles that help others find their way through the storms of 2023 - because this too is a way to serve!
No matter what happens this week, remember I am with you always in love 💖
